The Boston Bruins continued to struggle last night against the Los Angeles Kings. In their first and only meeting with the Kings this season, the Bruins lost 3-2 in overtime. Boston looked to be in control heading into the third period with a 2-0 lead, but the Kings scored a power play goal in the 10th minute and tied the game with just 1:36 left in regulation. LA finished off the Bruins with just 34 seconds left in overtime.
In the defeat, Matt Hunwick and Mark Recchi scored for the Bruins, who fell to 3-5 in the month of March. After starting the season so well, the Bruins seem to have lost their confidence. After building a 2 goal lead, Boston became defensive and let the Kings take it to them. LA had 38 shots to the Bruins 26. When you give up that many shots, a couple are bound to find their way to the back of the net. However, it wasn’t as if the Bruins didn’t have their chances. In 4 power plays, the B’s looked flat and barely made dent in the King’s defense.
With a win, the Bruins would have become the first team in the Eastern Conference and the third overall to clinch a playoff birth. Instead, Boston must put this hard loss behind them as they face the second place New Jersey Devils on Sunday.
