Weekly Blog Round-Up: ‘Follow that School Bus!’ Edition

roundupsmallHello again, and welcome to the ‘Follow that School Bus!’ Edition of the Weekly Blog Round-Up. Summer has begun, so Wednesday will be the Round-Up’s new home as the College Rag Recap goes on vacation. And if you think Wednesday is a weird time to do a Round-Up…well, screw you. Because this is how we’re doin’ it.

…OK, sorry about the “screw you” remark. I didn’t mean it. Really. But this is how we’re doin’ it. So let’s stop beatin’ ’round the bush and do it already:

From the News Blog

schoolbus21) Some stories just defy explanation. If you’re looking to make a getaway from the police, what sort of vehicle would you hijack to do so? It seems sensible to say that a school bus would be a poor choice. Sigh…When we shared this article on The Twitter, Lisa pointed out that “If they made a movie about that, it would be called ‘The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down.’” Obscure Simpsons reference for the win.

piggybank2) The college rags we normally cover may be going on break, but they’re leaving just as a big story is headed their way–Providence mayor David Cicilline wants to tax private university students living in the city $300 a year. The tax money would help cover a $17 million budget shortfall for this year. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.

twitter-logo3) Speaking of college students, check this out if you are one–WBRU News is looking for students with an interest in media and reporting for its summer internship program. You only have a couple more days to let us know if you’re interested, so shoot an e-mail to news@wbru.com for more info.

ray_lahood4) Speaking of jobs, they might be hard to come by these days, but the Secretary of Transportation says help could be on the way. That is, sustainable jobs could be coming if the infrastructure modernization projects he wants move forward. Click through to read the full report from an interview with Ray LaHood by our friends at Scoop 44.

miss california5) And finally, a story to take your mind off the economy: Miss California, also known as Carrie Prejean, got in hot water last week for bashing gay marriage as sinful. Seemingly in retaliation, a site has posted photos of her in some positions that are just as prudent and holy as those “Hot Christian Girls” ads on Facebook. However, the latest reports say Prejean’s going to keep her crown.

Five Awesome Things

MLIA1) You’ve probably already seen the latest sensation on the Interwebs, FMyLife, where people send in short stories explaining how their Lives are F’d. Today, I found this wonderful, wonderful website: My Life is Average. MBPJGALBETW. (My Blog Post Just Got A Little Bit Easier To Write). Share your favorites in the comments!

sparta2) Two more weird sites to share with you–the first is entitled “Ask A Urinal,” and the posts are pretty close to what you’d expect. People take pictures of bathroom graffiti, and some snarky webmaster prefaces them with funny questions. This is par for the course for a smash hit online. For example: “Dear Urinal: wtf is this?” Answer to the left.

automeme3) And here’s another oddball: some memes online, like “This is Sparta!” have clear points of origin (in this case, the movie 300). But wander into a group of uber-nerds, and you might find them spouting phrases that seemingly make no sense whatsoever. These phrases have gained their vaunted status from years of repetition, but if you want to play catch-up, I humbly present the Auto-Meme Generator. Warning: you will waste a lot of time here. Warning 2: this is an Internet thing, which means lots of language your mother wouldn’t approve of.

Star Trek4) I’m a big fan of online quizzes, but sometimes I come across exemplar, um, examples that make me want to stand up and applaud. This is one of them: Given a name, can you tell if it is a Star Trek character, NPR personality, or food additive? Brilliant!

twain5) And finally, keep yourself going this week with some inspirational words from the great Mark Twain. Now available in Motivator poster format for easy reading!

The reports of this blog post’s ending are greatly exaggerated. Keep the discussion about these links going in the comments below, and be sure to check out past editions of the Weekly Blog Round-Up for more awesome links like these.
