The Revolution suffered an unfortunate break with five minutes left last night resulting in a 1-1 draw against Kansas City. Revs defenseman Darrius Barnes accidentally deflected a cross pass into the net while trying to clear the ball down field. Defenseman Jeff Larentowicz says it could happen to anyone.
The Revs, who were without stars Taylor Twellman, Shalrie Joseph, and Captain Steve Ralston, also lost forward Michael Vidiera midway through the first half after he picked up a controversial red card. Vidiera threw an unintentional elbow which caught Wizards defenseman Aaron Hohlben in the face. Coach Steve Nicol talks about the penalty.
The Revs, playing a man down, refused to let it affect them. They took a 1-0 lead into the half, as Kheli Dube pounded his second goal in as many games during stoppage time. Based on circumstance, the 2nd half was primarily defensive-oriented for the Revs. They controlled the tempo and stayed conservative. Up until the 85th minute, the Revs had the momentum, until one miscue delayed their plans of advancing to the Super Liga semi-finals. Due to the Atlas-Santos tie following the game, The Revolution don’t necessarily need a win to advance, although it would be preferable for the defending tournament champs to determine their own fate.
The Revolution battle Atlas on Sunday, which will be their final opening round match. The Revs will have to rely heavily on their bench, seeing as they have multiple starters unable to play. When asked about playing 3 games in 8 days, here’s how Nicol responded.
