Cape Cod Residents Flee Honduras After Presidential Coup

Two groups of Cape Cod residents have been forced to flee Honduras in the political unrest that resulted from the kidnapping of president Zelaya.

Zelaya was focred from his bed at gunpoint and exiled to Costa Rica on Sunday.

The Cape Cod residents were in Honduras on humanitarian missions. The group from Our Lady of Victory Church arrived back yesterday morning.

A family of four from the orgainization Cape Cares were providing medical relief when the upheaval began. Elyse DeGroot, her husband Dr. Robert McGowen and their two teenagers landed safely in Atlanta last night and have made their connecting flight home. DeGroot described the Honduran airport as very different from when they arrived, “There were people with machine guns.”

Several members from Cape Cares remain in Honduras, only one of whom is from the Cape. She is expected to return tomorrow. [Cape Cod Times]
