Runamuck, or Tent City, is described in the Providence Journal as “a surprisingly well organized community”. It has its own governing board, a bank account, and demarcated property lines – sometimes enclosing lawn ornaments or planted gardens.
And while elected leader Roland Colpitts says the community doesn’t encourage anyone to live outside, residents say they also don’t turn anyone away.
There are some rules by which residents must abide. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to live there, residents must work with a social worker, and they can’t take community supplies if they have any income.
Still, Fox Pointers have begun to express concern for the camp’s residents, as well as the quality of life in their own community.
“Someone has to press the screws on the city to do something,” says Sheldon Street resident Christopher Owens.
Neither the state, nor the city, have taken action thus far to close Camp Runamuck down, or to offer assistance to its residents. [ProJo]
