Rain was the story at the Campbell’s Tennis Hall of Fame Championships yesterday. Matches were scheduled to begin at 11, but they did not start until after 1:30 and half an hour later, were suspended again due to rain. When play was suspended, former world number 4 Sebastian Grosjean was up a set on American Kevin Kim. Kim had his chances early, with 2 break points in the first game of the match and taking Grosjean to deuce on his first 3 service games. After the first rain delay, things got interesting with 3 straight breaks of serve.
This is just Grosjean’s second tournament since having shoulder surgery last December. Right before the end of the set, he called for a trainer to work on his shoulder. Grosjean’s serve lost a lot of pace after the rain delay. He talks about the conditions.
American Sam Querrey who was supposed to play yesterday praised the tournament for calling play early.
He kept himself occupied by playing a combination of botchie ball, tennis, and golf during the rain. Querrey invented a game where you toss a tennis ball and then golf another ball until you hit the first one. It’s something to pass the time as opposed to sitting and waiting.
