Move out date set for tent city residents

A judge says a group of homeless residents living in a city park in Providence must
move later this month.

Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Lanphear set on Monday a Sept. 28
move-out date for the roughly 10 couples living near the Roger
Williams Medical Center.

Lanphear said the city is entitled to enforce laws against
illegal camping, but added that the cases illustrate the major
problems facing the homeless population in Providence.

The homeless residents previously lived at Camp Runamuck, a
larger homeless encampment on state land under an Interstate 195
bridge in East Providence. Before that, the group had agreed to leave
state-owned land in Providence.
