My soon-to-be new favorite show is already causing trouble.
A new MTV reality show, “Jersey Shore” is set to debut next week. Obviously it’s about a bunch of guidos hanging out, fist pumping, and wearing no shirts. MTV hypes the show as following the, quote, “hottest, tannest, and craziest guidos.”
It seems one Italian-American group is calling for the network to pull the plug on the show all together. National organization UNICO calls the show offensive and exploits stereotypes of Italian-Americans in its promotions.
You know what exploits stereotypes? Just being from New Jersey and being Italian. You’re basically a stereotype.

Hey MTV folks, just in case you didn’t know, the term “guido” and “guidette/guida” is derogetory and an ethnic slur that people outside of New York/New Jersey use when they want to insult Italian Americans who live there. And to show you how dumb the cast is of your new show Jersey Shore- they actually refer to themselves as guidos and guidas. What a bunch of losers.
Simply put, ‘Guido’ is an ethnic slur used to demean Italian Americans. MTV claims ‘Guido’ to be a mainstream term, but I bet the N-Word is mainstream in some sections of the U.S. Both are wrong, both demean large groups of people, and both should not be used (especially by MTV—the channel of Choose or Lose, Rock the Vote, and whatever else they claim to be)

Let me first say that I have not yet had the chance to see this reality t.v. show and, from what I’ve heard about it so-far from other people makes me definitly not want to watch it… As an Italian-American I was embarrassed and angried to hear and learn about how the central theme of this show is to capture Italians acting their worse by accepting an identity that is not part of the Italian culture and is rather degrading to most Italians, especially when we all do not act like this. Unfortunately, these cast members do not realize that MTV is using them and exploiting there heritage for ratings. And, as Italian-American I do not agree that the word or term “Guido” is part of Italian heritage. The cast members on this show that embrace and identity themselves as Guidos or Guiettes obviously have no idea what that word means because what they are saying and accepting is that they are a low, working class thug. The reason why that word is so offensive is because, Italians have come a long way since coming to American to break out of that mold. Even though for a brief period of time there were a small percetage of Italian-Americans that lived up to that definition, the majority of Italian-Americans are and have been law abiding citzens and have and continue to demonstrate that they are true American patriots. Italian-Americans have worked very hard to weave themselves into the American fabric and as a result have made great strides in various professions including sports (Joe Dimaggio & Vince Lombardi to name a few..) and politics/government by doing so. I can also say that Guido is not part of the Italian heritage because Italians in Italy do not even identify themselves as or act like “Guidos”. So basically the word is based from America in order to degrade and remind an ethnic group about what they once were… With that being said I cannot understand how anyone would embrace or want to identify themselves as a Guido or cannot see that MTV is again exploiting Italians for what they are not….
